San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Monterey County dispensaries to remain open during public lockdown
Initial announcements of “shelter-in-place” orders in San Francisco shut down dispensaries and cannabis delivery services, allowing only “essential businesses” to operate as usual. Gas stations, pharmacies and grocery stores stayed open to provide residents with all they need, but dispensaries were excluded from this list.
San Francisco mayor, London Breed, announced the next day that the public health order would be adjusted to include cannabis services. Dispensaries and marijuana deliveries are now being deemed critical.
“In terms of the cannabis dispensaries, the Department of Public Health today clarified that since cannabis has medical uses, dispensaries will be allowed to operate as essential businesses, just as pharmacies are allowed to do”London Breed, Mayor of San Francisco
The initial announcment to stay inside “with the only exception being for essential needs” upset many residents and industry leaders because it did not include cannabis as an essential need. The truth is, cannabis is very essential for many people who use it as a medicine. Pain, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, depression, and stress are some of the many afflictions that people manage with cannabis. If someone can go to the pharmacy to get Tylenol or Advil, why not a more natural treatment?
Officials and local governments were receptive to this feedback and announced later the same day that cannabis-related businesses would be allowed to reopen and operate, suggesting they follow social distancing recommendations.
Similar clarifications have been made in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, calming the nerves of thousands of people who depend on the holistic health benefits of cannabis.
